How to help at home
Preparing your child to start school begins well before their first day in Kindergarten.
Here are some ways you can help at home to prepare your child to start school:
- Ensure you attend the Transition to School Program so they are familiar with the teachers and other students
- Speak positively about what may happen
- Read lots of books about school (often preschool will have a collection parents can borrow)
- Involve your child in choosing a lunch box, water bottle
- Be excited when trying on uniforms and buying shoes
- Get to know other parents and organise a time to meet up at a local park before school starts so the children can get to know each other, particularly if there are no other friends from preschool going to the same school
- Pack a lunchbox and then have lunch outside in the backyard or park, making sure your child knows how to open containers
- Start evening and morning routines in the holidays so the start of the year is as enjoyable and stress-free for everyone.
